Application Assignments
The components of your assignment include:

1. There is not an assignment in chapter 25; the assignment is explained here. This assignment will involve the use of the helping3.sav data set. First, you need to create a new variable diempath. You will dichotomize the score into high and low values of empathy. You should compute a new variable and set the value = 1 if empathyt is greater than 5.11 and value =0 if empathyt is less than or equal to 5.11 (if you run the distributions, this is a median split). If you do not remember how to do this, Chapter 4 in your text shows you how to compute and label a new variable (make sure to check the new variable you create – the word "thru" in SPSS does not include the number following the word "thru", so be sure you are not missing 16 cases by using syntax that reads "thru 5.11" you will have to use " thru 5.12." As always, save your syntax and output.

2. For the logistic regression, follow the basic steps laid out in Chapter 25 (you may choose to use either the ENTER or FORWARD method; the output provided in the course uses the ENTER method). As instructed by the text, use the "deviation" contrast for the categorical variable "ethnic." Make sure you are using the newly created diempath as the dependent variable.

3. Present the results using APA format in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (there are examples in the Study Notes). State the null and alternative hypothesis and include a measure of effect size. You must include a table this week (see Study Notes for a sample).
