During the 60s and 70s, governments in the West were terrified of the Soviet Union and communism. The West, led by the U.S. fought communism everywhere. In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh led an uprising against the colonial French government. He came to the West and the U.S. and asked for their help. He even wanted to use the U.S. Declaration of Independence as his model for his new government. The U.S. rejected him because France was an ally.
