For this essay, inspired by the extraordinarily elegant and persuasive argumentation of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail, we are going to write a hard-hitting, full length argument paper. Rather than writing the normal, boring argument essay you practiced in high school, I invite you here to think outside the box and write an argument original to you about something you are passionate about. In other words, you’re going to write a manifesto!
On the Nature of the Manifesto:
Manifestos are written for a variety of reasons: to emphatically proclaim opinions about something, to declare political, societal or artistic intentions, to clarify something that needs clarification, or to call for change.
Clearly, the one thing manifestos have in common is a passionate tone with affirmative, authoritative language. Because those who choose to write manifestos feel very strongly about their topics, they often use robust, emphatic words to describe their ideas. Having strong language does not mean, however, that manifestos are essays in which the authors just gripe, complain, or accuse.
Manifestos are intended to be constructive, outside the box possibilities for humanity. Artists, who are often involved in movements, like to compose manifestos too. As you read, consider: what is the structure of the manifesto? What is its tone, that is, is it ironical, angry, funny, serious, pragmatic?

Make sure your topic is broad enough, and your thesis focused enough, for your argument to be effective. In short, a manifesto goes beyond argument — it makes a radical proposal. It’s a bit edgy, a little confrontational. It makes us think.

Also, consider whether your argument needs the support of quotations from authorities in the field. Not all manifestos require quotations and research to write, but if your essay does, consult the guidelines for MLA citation style and start your research process as well!

Second Essay (no more than 1300 words, please)
Required references: Frankl, Viktor. Man’s Search for Meaning: An Introduction to Logotherapy. And other Frankl’s work.

According to the theory of Logotherapy, "we can discover meaning in life in three different ways: 1. by creating a work or doing a deed; 2. by experiencing something or encountering someone; and 3. by the attitude we take toward unavoidable suffering."
Write an autobiography that shows, rather than tells, how Frankl’s theory applies to your own life. Be sure your experience fits into one of the three ways to meaning outlined by Frankl in "Logotherapy in a Nutshell"

Be sure as well to use quotations from Frankl’s Logotherapy in a Nutshell and Experiences in a Concentration Camp to support your discussion. You need to show us how one of the ways, or a certain combination of the three ways, to meaning has worked in your own life! You should be introducing Frankl’s theory in your introduction and thesis — and quoting him throughout your essay.

Make effective use of quotations from Frankl’s work. That means not just the obvious quotations from the assignment description, but other quotes as well, which demonstrate his (or her) internalization of Frankl’s thought and a capacity to apply Frankl’s ideas creatively to his experience.

Third Essay (no more than 1300 words, please) {this is a final essay of my course}

Interview an older member of your family or community who lived through a significant historical period ? this could be World War II, the Great Depression, the Cultural Revolution, the Harlem Renaissance, etc. Then do research on the period and write a paper contextualizing their experience in its wider historical background. Along with the internet, be sure to cite 2 print sources. Use MLA style.

Who are you interviewing, and why is their life experience significant?
Are you able to capture their language and character with direct quotations?
What resources have you found, in library texts and at legitimate online sources, to help you give the larger historical context of your subject’s experience?
What two or three events in your subject’s life are you going to zoom in on and explore in detail, taking us into his or her experience as if he or she were a character from a novel?

This is an opportunity to reclaim the past of our families and community members. So get out there and identify your interviewee and conduct a preliminary interview, seeking to identify what historical era you want to focus upon.
