COURSEWORK: REPORT FORMAT FOR QPSK AND ERROR CONTROL CODING

COURSEWORK: REPORT FORMAT FOR QPSK AND ERROR CONTROL CODING

You are not required to write a formal laboratory report on the two experiments. Only one report is needed. It will be in two parts:

1. Quaternary Phase Shift Keying
and
2. Error Control in a PCM System.

The report should answer the questions below. Please submit your report in word-processed form, including the plots obtained during the laboratory sessions. Sharing of images taken by a group will not be classified as plagiarism, however any text believed to be the result of group work or copying will be subject to the faculty plagiarism procedure. You will need to refer to notes and textbooks together with the advice given in the laboratory briefing in order to give full answers.
Questions for QPSK (questions for Error Control are overleaf)

1. Referring to the waveforms observed on the Modicom 5/1 modulator inputs and outputs, together with the summing amplifier output, explain the operation of the QPSK modulator.
(10 marks)
2. Referring to the waveforms observed on the Modicom 5/2 QPSK demodulator block explain how the carrier signal is reconstructed at the receiver.
(8 marks)
3. Referring to the waveforms observed on the Modicom 5/2 at each stage of demodulation (I and Q outputs, low-pass filters and data squaring circuits) explain the method of operation of the whole QPSK demodulation process. Identify any differences compared to coherent detection in your notes.
(14 marks)
4. Referring to your plots of the QPSK frequency spectrum, identify the null-to-null bandwidth of the signal and the null-to-null bandwidths of the individual binary PSK signals. What is the significance of your results?

Questions for Error Control

1. Referring to the relevant results, explain how odd parity bits and even parity bits were calculated.
(4 marks)
2. Referring to your encodings using the Hamming Code, determine the generator matrix that describes the encoder. Use this to determine the parity check matrix.
(6 marks)
3. Referring to the relevant results, explain how odd parity bits and even parity bits were used to detect errors.
(4 marks)
4. Referring to the results of decoding using the Hamming Code, show how the decoder operates, explaining all calculations. You will need to use your answers to question 2.
(7 marks)
5. Referring to the waveforms, explain the effect of the error on the received signal and comment on the effect of introducing error correction.
(4 marks)
