Critique of Katherine Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory Theory Analysis and Evaluation
Application of the Theory to Research
I. Theory Analysis and Evaluation
A. Theory and Theorist
1. State the name of the theorist and the name assigned to the
theory
2. Provide a brief biographical background of the theorist(s)
3. Identify other theories and theorists upon which the theory is
based -your opinion, with rationale.
B. Theory Overview
1. Statement of the focus of the theory in your own words.
2. Main premise of theory from the view of the theorist (may be a quote).
3. Main concepts used in the theory and a definition of each concept
4. State how concepts are related to each other, based on the author’s description, including any stated assumptions or propositions.
5. Include brief summaries of theories underpinning the theory, based on statements/quotes in literature made by the author of the theory or a critique of the theory by another theorist or scholar.
NOTE: In this section you need to include references e.g. textbooks and articles written by the author/s of the theory (not secondary sources) or websites authored by the theorist/s.
C. Analysis and Evaluation of the Theory
Peterson & Bredow, Ch 2 serves as an outline for this secton
1. Internal Criticism
a. Adequacy
b. Clarity
c. Consistency
d. Logical Development
e. Level of Theory Development
2. External Criticism
a. Complexity
b. Discrimination
c. Reality Convergence
d. Pragmatic
e. Scope
f. Significance
g. Utility
3. Discuss and critique any tools/instruments developed
II. Application of the Theory to Research
A. Provide your viewpoint on the current evidence of the utility of this theory for application to research (include a rationale for your opinion). This section may have limited references, except for rationale statements that are based on published literature.
B. Review literature and report research published that is based on this theory. Give a brief summary of each research study found that includes: Author; Purpose/Problem; Method and Findings. This section is based on published literature and references for each article discussed is referenced in the text and added to the References following APA format.
C. State your view of the current compared to the future utility of the theory in research. What types of research could be conduected now and what development of the theory would be needed to move to other types of research? For example, if this is a grand theory, the focus of research now might be qualitative studies (ontological) to further define the concepts with the potential for quantitative studies (epistemological) in the future. Or at this point, is the the theory ready to support studies leading to acquisition of knowledge for evidence based practice? This section is your opinion, based on rationale and evidence you gather in the review and analysis process. This section may have limited references, except for rationale statements that are based on published literature.
References:
Provide at least 5 articles or text references on the theory development and/or the application of the theory. Provide a reference list of all references cited in the presentation on the final slide of the presentation. In addition, the author, year of the article/text citations is noted on the slides discussing literature findings (small type/font). Format for all references follows APA Guidelines.
