Cuban Economic Growth
Expanding a Socialist Economy in a Liberal World System
History, Politics, Economy

The National Geographic article is not the first to pique my interest on the subject of Cuba, there have been articles on the subject of a changing Cuba for at the past year. However it brings up my main question quite nicely, that is of a “new now” for Cuba. This is certainly a question of politics and economy, but to discuss what is new requires discussion of the history of Cuba as well. With out an understanding of past political events on cannot aptly address new issues.
Cuba, as an economy, has primarily been a non-entity for the US. Cuba, as a society and government, is now a point of contention, especially when applied to its functioning as a market. Just because Cuba did not interact with the developing power of the US does not however mean that it did not interact with others in the global market and itself develop. With the backing of first Soviet Russia and now Venezuela and China, Cuba has maintained its Socialist values and operations, while making these forays into the dynamic market. Cuba is by all means an entity in this market, but one attached to a problematic (for some) political system. For Cuba, the dilemma is how to maintain it’s socialist government and develop it’s economy, in a global atmosphere of economic liberalism and globalization. So, how does it grow?
This is a task for the entirety of the Cuban government, but among the cabinet of Raul Castro, the person to implement solutions would be Jose Amado Ricardo Guerra, the executive of the council of ministers. Further delegation would involve the ministers of foreign trade and investment, finance and prices, and economy and planning. Together they would work towards their goal of a healthy market for socialist Cuba, an economy with growth. To propose a solution I will be looking at the current state of the Cuban government, other socialist economies, as well as other countries related geopolitically. Combined with the history and background of economic theory I will craft policies to establish a strong Cuban economy.

1. Begin with a paragraph that identifies your topic, explains its contemporary relevance (by making specific reference to your initial news article), and clearly identify the three disciplines you plan to use to examine your topic. This is also the place to set out the most important questions that guided your research of the topic. Remember the Introduction needs to ‘hook’ your reader so make it strong and direct.

2. Continue to the body of your paper and explain what your research in each disciplinary perspective has revealed about your topic. You might begin each disciplinary section with a phrase like: “A historical perspective on Xinjiang Province reveals that tensions between the Han and the Uighers have deep historical roots.” Be sure to properly cite the information for each disciplinary section of your paper. Also be sure to include transition paragraphs from one section to another, so that the paper reads as a coherent whole. Your goal is a synthesis of the material not a cut and paste job.

3. Conclude with a paragraph or two in which you sum up what you have discovered about your topic by utilizing all of these perspectives. You should also answer the question: which of the disciplinary perspective(s) seems most useful in understanding your international issue and why? Think before you write and aim to make your conclusion clear and concise. The Conclusion is your final chance to convince your reader of your position/thoughts/arguments etc.
