Think about close reading as a magnifying glass. You are showing the reader the small details that you noticed and beginning to comment on what they might mean.

Before you can begin writing a formal essay, you must choose one scene from the film that you are interested in exploring through a two page (double-spaced) close reading. Ideally, this close reading will be about the same scene you will eventually write about in your third essay. This close reading should explore many details and meanings. While they may be related, you should not develop a specific, unified argument/thesis about the scene at this point.

Where to begin: What drew you to this scene in the first place? Zero in on the details that create the feeling you had watching the scene the first time. Pursue the ideas you had about the scene initially and work to break it down into smaller parts.

Here are some things you can explore in a close reading. Note that you do not need to explore all of these topics. This is just a list of ideas to get you started. Remember that your ultimate goal is to notice and describe specific details of the text, and suggest what they might mean.

•Things that contradict and/or complement each other (images, lyrics, dialogue, sounds).
•Words and how they are used. (Are any words or phrases used unexpectedly? Do any words/phrases have a double meaning or connotations beyond the literal meanings?)
•Images and their significance: How is color used? Do any images call to mind other parts of the film? What signal(s) do the particular visual choices send to the viewer? What meaning do they suggest?
•Characters and their significance: How does the scene make viewers react to particular characters or events? How does a character’s role (as villain, hero, etc.) lead the viewer to interpret other elements of the scene (lyrics, dialogue, images, etc.)?
•Symbolism: Are there any metaphors? What are they? How do they operate? What about symbolism? Do any objects or actions seem to represent something else? Do any objects, colors, animals, plants, etc. have traditional connotations or meanings? Religious or biblical significance? How do these different meanings contribute to your understanding of the scene?
Remember that I’ve posted a sample close reading to the Course Documents folder. As we discussed in class, this sample leans more toward an argument than you need to in your close reading, but serves as a good example of looking at several specific details and beginning to think through what they mean. Follow your own interests for this assignment, and don’t worry about an argument until later in the writing process
