Dennis is a young 7 years old boy who is quite small in stature, and appears to be slow to meet developmental milestones. This is his third year in school. Dennis has attended 10 different schools in the past three years. Dennis lives with his biological father, and has since he was 2 years old. Dennis resided with his teen mother until 2 years old. At that time his mother handed him over to his biological father. The father assumed full custody of Dennis and has been his primary caregiver since then. Little is known about Dennis’s father other then he appears to be involved in multiple relationships. The school has observed in the past and now, many different women who come to pick up Dennis at the end of the school day and identify themselves as ‘friends’ of the father. Dennis’s mother drifts in and out of his life. On a few occasions when she has taken Dennis for an overnight at her home it was reported that she would leave him home alone while she would go out. She has a drug habit and maintains a criminal lifestyle to support her habit. She is presently serving a two-year jail sentence for fraud.

It has been observed by different school personnel that since Dennis first started school, three years ago, he often smells of urine and has what appear to be insect bites on his legs, which might have been from fleas. Dennis also often has an uncontrollable appetite. He gorges on any snack that is provided, and even steals other children’s lunches. It was often after concerns are discussed with the father that Dennis would be moved to another school. Child protection has been involved in the past for brief periods, helping the father determine a plan for the child. At these involvements Dennis’s physical care has much improved.

In the past few weeks, Dennis seems to be directing a lot of physical aggression toward other children for no apparent reason. When school personnel and or his day care provider approach him he becomes very fearful and withdrawn. Dennis has great difficulty socializing with other children and is unable to maintain positive relationships with peers his own age. The children at his school and day care are becoming quite fearful of his aggressive, acting out behaviour. When father is informed of this recent concerning behaviour he becomes defensive and tells the school that he is pleased his kid is finally ‘being a man’ and standing up for him-self. After this meeting father let the school know that in the future he only wants to be contacted by the school when there is a ‘real’ problem and that if they continue to make up stories about his kid he will move him to another school.
