6. Explain what you take to be Cormac McCarthy’s intention in writing The Sunset Limited.

7. Explain Karl Marx’s critique of capitalism and wage economies in his essay “Bourgeoisie and Proletariats.”

8. Explain the advice David Foster Wallace offers in his commencement speech to Kenyon College This is Water. Be sure to mention what Wallace calls 1) the default setting, 2) the distinction between the capacity to think and choosing what to think about, 3) the inevitability of worship, and 4) your own thoughts about Wallace’s advice.

9. Explain the advice Jonathan Franzen gives in his commencement speech to Kenyon College “Pain Won’t Kill You,” excerpted from his book of essays Farther Away. Be sure to mention the distinction between liking (as construed by techno-consumerism) and loving, and how one troubles the possibility of the other, and what Franzen thinks we can do about it.

10. Define freedom.

Bonus. Worth 10 points. Watch Elizabeth Gilbert’s Ted talk on creativity and inspiration (easily viewable on the Ted website) and summarize her argument and advice.
