developmental delay

developmental delay

ASSIGNMENT 1
You should answer the following questions in as much detail as is necessary to demonstrate the topics , and their clinical application. However, your response to each individual question should not exceed 1000 words.
Ensure that you support your answers with references. It is not necessary to restrict your answers to the concepts presented in this module. It is expected that you will access additional references other than this module when formulating your responses.

1. What is the significance of developmental delay? Which aspects of development are often related to later learning problems?
2. What are the key areas in the case history that should be assessed when a child is suspected of having a vision-related learning problem?
3. One viewpoint is that no developmental case history is necessary – if you know the patient’s current difficulties, then your clinical assessment will determine if you can help or not. Comment on whether you agree or disagree with this view, citing your reasons.
4. When evaluating a patient’s convergence, you notice that using an accommodative target, or touching the target, improves convergence in some patients. What does this imply about the patient’s control of convergence?
5. Why does accommodation fatigue, and what are the symptoms when it does? How does it impact on reading?
6. A child adopts a close working distance (e.g. 20 cm) when reading. What is your explanation for this? Would you expect any associated accommodative or binocular findings? If so, what?
7. What are the most common patterns of accommodative and binocular imbalances observed in primary school children?
8. What are the key observations to be made by the examiner when evaluating visual perception? Why are these observations so important?
9. Explain the difference between simultaneous and sequential visual processing, and how they are used when reading.
10. Why should we assess visual perception in a pre-school child, if the case history does not reveal any evidence of developmental delay?

11. When measuring visual acuity, you observe that a 7 year old says the sound of each letter, rather than the letter name, sometimes tracing the letter shape in the air. She is slow to respond, and has to pretend to write before she can tell you which hand she writes with. What visual perceptual tests would you administer, and why? What impact, if any, would you expect on her school performance?
12. What is your understanding of the term “visual spatial skills”? How are they used in the classroom?
13. What aspects of “visual analysis skills” are utilised in reading? How would you evaluate them?
14. A 10 year old boy is reported to have poor handwriting. How would you assess this? What visual processing skills may have an impact on handwriting performance?
15. If an 8 year old child is having difficulty with reading and spelling, what tests would you perform, and why?
16. When analysing your results for a visual perception evaluation, when would your behavioural observations influence your diagnosis and management?
