Digital Image Processing Exercise

Coursework Title: Digital Image Processing Exercise

Introduction
This coursework in involves using Digital Image Processing techniques to extract information from an image.  It is designed to meet the following Learning Outcome of this module, as presented in the module specification, i.e.
Learning Outcome to be assessed
Use the concepts of point processing, spatial domain processing and Fourier domain processing for the enhancement of images and for the extraction of meaningful information from them with applications in engineering and technology
Coursework Specification
For this coursework, you will need to use MATLAB to process an image yourself to extract some information. If you are not sure that your chosen image is suitable, please ask.
Task
1.    Search the internet to find an image from which you can extract some information, or take one yourself.
2.    Use MATLAB to extract some information from the image.  This will require:
a.     preprocessing to make it easier to extract information (this should involve more than one operation)
b.    The extraction of the information:  this could be, for example, the equation of the line representing an edge in an image, or the area of the image occupied by a particular object.
3.    Write a Word document to show what you did.  This should involve:
a.    A short description of the image and the information you extracted,
b.    A formal reference to the source of the image,
c.    The image you worked on,
d.    A description of the initial processing you carried out,
e.    The MATLAB code you used,
f.    The resulting image,
g.    A description of the operations you used to extract the information,
h.    The MATLAB code you used to extract the information,
i.    The information you found,
j.    A review of how successful your operation was, what it might be used for, and how the process could be improved.  This section is very important, and carries 40% of the available marks.
k.    Formal references to any sources of information you used to produce the report.
Every student should use a different image and processing procedure, so you should produce a completely independent report.
Marking Scheme
Suitability of image – Well chosen image
Description of image and data extracted – clearly introduced
Prepocessing – appropriateness -Well chosen
Prepocessing – description -Clear and thorough
Information extraction- appropriateness -Well chosen
Information extraction – description -Clear and thorough
