Drug addiction & Teens
Capstone Project Topic Selection
Read the final Capstone Project instructions in the the last section of paper below” section of Week Five- Capstone Project. Each week’s assignment will be a major component of the Capstone Project. Chapters 1 through 3 will guide you in the process of outlining your topic.
Identify a key issue that affects a specific population. Pick a topic you would like to write on this research essay. I think drug addiction is a very good topic.
• Who is affected by this issue?
• How are they affected by this issue?
Evaluate the population that is affected by the issue.
• Which social stratifications contribute to the issue?
• What are the socioeconomic and cultural factors that exist within this population segment that relate to the issue?
• What are the environmental forces that influence this population?
Determine challenges to resolving this issue.
• Which political factors represent challenges to resolving the issue?
• Which psychological factors represent challenges to resolving the issue?
• Which historical factors represent challenges to resolving the issue?
Annotated Bibliography
The purpose of the annotated bibliography is to assist you in developing research analysis skills including critical thinking, writing, and literature research skills. Focus your research on the specific population you selected on week- 1 and the issue that you connected to this population from the first 3 page essay on week 1.
The annotated bibliography should include a paragraph for each source that contains the following information: ten scholarly resources
• Name of the article, including the complete bibliographic citation, using APA format.
• Summary/abstract of the article – annotation (sometimes it is helpful to ask yourself the following questions in synthesizing the information):
o Who? (author)
o What was done? (e.g., an experimental study investigating the interaction of short term memory and attention)
o How? (was it done)
• What were the findings? (identify the major ones)
• Contributions? (new findings, applications, etc.)
Review the complete instructions for the Capstone Project in Week Five which is on the bottom of this page on week 5. To conduct accurate research for the annotated bibliography, consider the following:
• Research in peer-reviewed journals or other journals that are considered to have reliable information (do not use sources from the secular press (e.g., Time, Newsweek, or Wikipedia). Review the guidelines for acceptable sources by reading the “Academic Research” section within the Student Responsibilities and Policies tab under Course Home on the left navigation toolbar in your online course.
• Identify at least ten (10) academic sources, six (6) of which should come from the Ashford Online Library.
o IMPORTANT NOTE: Remember that your Capstone Project includes setting up a potential statistical research analysis of the population in question. With this in mind, at least four (4) of the ten articles that you outline should include some form of statistical analysis and testing of hypotheses based on those statistical findings. This will aid you in the way that you set up your model research in your Capstone Project as well as provide you with examples of how to utilize these statistical methods.
o please note that (a) a research report presents background information (literature review) and method, results, and discussion sections whereby original data are presented, and (b) a research paper does not present original data but will include athorough literature review and perhaps a suggested methodology and ideas for future research in the area
Proposal for Statistical Research Project
Having identified a population, an issue/problem that relates to that specific population, and then gathered academic resources that relate to the issue, you will now be asked to propose a statistical research project that directly relates to the social issue you identified for your selected population. Pay special attention to Chapter 7 of the text as well, as it has excellent information on variables that one can adequately test and general designs for experimentation involving statistical analysis.
• Plan a research study, describing in detail what you want to measure and why.
• Describe the individuals who would be involved in your study.
• Determine a realistic timeline for the completion of your project.
• Explain how many people would be needed to conduct the research project from a staffing perspective.
• Determine which statistical analysis method (e.g., statistical tests/measurements) would be most appropriate for your application, and elucidate why you chose this method.
• Determine how many subjects you would require for your study and explain how you arrived at that number.
• Evaluate the importance of your proposed research study, and describe how the resulting data could best be used and which organizations or agencies will benefit best from it.
Develop a research paper, in which you analyze a key issue facing a population segment in order to propose an area for additional research. Your research will:
Part I: Background
• Describe your chosen population segment.
• Explain one major social issue facing your selected population segment.
o Provide statistics and background data to document the social issues facing your selected population segment.
• Analyze the social and cultural factors contributing to the social issue.
o What are the political, economic, legal, practical, and ethical aspects of the issue?
o What are the multiple levels contributing to and/or perpetuating the issues (i.e., individual, group, and societal levels)?
o What are the personal, professional, and ethical implications on the society?
• Examine two of the most significant challenges facing the selected population segment related to this issue.
o Apply data from your research to support your claims about the challenges.
Part II: Research Proposal
Propose a statistical research project that directly relates to the social issue you identified for your selected population.
• Create a plan to conduct your research study, describing in detail what you want to measure and why. Below are a few points to include:
o Who would be involved?
o What would be a realistic timeline for completing your proposed project?
o How many people would be needed to conduct the research project from a staffing perspective?
o Which statistical analysis method (e.g., statistical tests/measurements) would be most appropriate for your application?
o How many subjects would you require for your study?
• Evaluate the importance of your proposed research study, and describe how the resulting data could best be used and which organizations or agencies will benefit best from it.
