Elementary Science Lesson Plan and Instruction reflection

The graduate provides safe, effective, research-based science instruction.

Objective 602.4.17-15: Lead an activity that requires students to manipulate tools, exhibits, or organic materials to learn a science concept.
________________________________________
Given:
“The goals of modern elementary school science include the acquisition of knowledge, manipulative skills, intellectual skills, and investigative and objective attitudes. These ambitious goals may best be reached by programs based on methods of problem solving and manipulative activities” (Esler & Esler, 2001, p. 12).

Task:
A. Contact the specific school staff member, teacher, or administrator at the location of your school placement who supervises your pre-clinical experience (PCE); arrange to lead a group activity that requires students to manipulate tools, exhibits, or organic materials to learn a science concept. You will need to meet with the classroom teacher beforehand to determine the focus of this science lesson. You will also need to ask the teacher what activities to conduct, what manipulatives to use, and what instructional methods to employ. If you have not yet received confirmation of your PCE placement, contact your mentor before proceeding with this task.
B. Outline an original plan for leading this activity in conjunction with the teacher’s lesson plan. Submit this plan as an attachment to this task.
C. Provide the classroom teacher with a copy of the activity plan you developed in part B to review before you teach the lesson. Lead the activity. The classroom teacher must observe your instruction and sign the Summary Task List. (Forms appropriate to Elementary Education programs are located under “Available Learning Resources” for the EIT4/5 on your AAP. The Summary Task List form for the Special Education program is located under “Available Learning Resources” for the ELT4 on your AAP.) Once you have completed all Pre-clinical Tasks and received the signatures of the cooperating classroom teachers and principal, make a copy for your own records and submit the form to WGU Office of Field Experiences per the instructions on the Summary Task List.
D. After your lesson presentation, write responses to the prompts (1–2 paragraphs per prompt) using the Guided Reflection Protocol Form. To access the form, follow these instructions:
• Click the Complete Form button that appears in the bar below this task.
• Answer the questions in the form. If you need additional space, include an attachment with your response.
E. If you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
Note: Please save word-processing documents as *.rtf (Rich Text Format) or *.pdf (Portable Document Format) files.

Note: When bulleted points are present in the task prompt, the level of detail or support called for in the rubric refers to those bulleted points.

Note: For definitions of terms commonly used in the rubric, see the Rubric Terms web link included in the Evaluation Procedures section.

Note: When using sources to support ideas and elements in a paper or project, the submission MUST include APA formatted in-text citations with a corresponding reference list for any direct quotes or paraphrasing. It is not necessary to list sources that were consulted if they have not been quoted or paraphrased in the text of the paper or project.

Note: No more than a combined total of 30% of a submission can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. For tips on using APA style, please refer to the APA Handout web link included in the General Instructions section.
Reference List:
Note: This reference list refers only to direct citations in the task above and may be different than those you need to complete the task. Consult your Course of Study for a list of suggested learning resources.
