At the start of our course, we have studied several definitions of myth as a type of literature and discussed its characteristics, functions and problems. We also have looked at parts of two different mythic stories: the conflicts represented in Homer’s The Iliad and the idea of journey as represented in The Odyssey.
For your first essay I would like you to compose an argument that compares one of these two texts to Armstrong’s concept of myth. You could use selections from Book I (lines 521-643) or Book VI (lines 253-528) of The Iliad, or selections from Books IX, X or XI of The Odyssey. For whatever text you select, you should use chapter one from A Short History of Myth (handout) to explain whether your text does or does not match professor Armstrong’s idea of myth. Be sure to use specific evidences from both texts.
