Instructions:
Assignment 1 (50%): Evaluation of the Visual Environment. This assignment requires the student to demonstrate an understanding of, and ability to apply the material from weeks 1 to 4. Students will analyse the interactions between surfaces and light.

Choose a real architectural space where electric light is interacting with multiple surfaces, such as a lift, bathroom etc.
Describe the space you have chosen.
Conduct a critical analysis of how light interacts with surfaces without the use of diagrams, formulas or photographs. Discuss at least three of the following topics:
Reflection
Transmission
Absorption
Refraction
Dispersion
Additional marks will be awarded for:
The use of quality information to support your analysis.
Inclusion of material found in the modules from weeks 1 to 4 which supports your analysis or description.
Submit as a fully referenced (APA format) essay of no more than 750 words.

This assessment aims improve your awareness of how light is applied in our environment and to assist you to converse about lighting concepts.

You need to describe the space you have chosen in detail.

Your description will probably include information about the current lighting. Describe the lighting in terms of concepts, such as mood, functionality, style, aesthetics, etc.

Your description may also include information about the surfaces within your space – textures, colours etc.

You might describe the location of your space.

You might describe the size of your space.

You do not need a cover sheet or title page for the assignment.
Please do not limit your ideas to my suggestions!
Choose at least 3 of the topics listed: (Reflection, Transmission, Absorption, Refraction, and Dispersion)

For each of your chosen topics describe how the light interacts with the surfaces in your chosen environment.

For example, Sally chose a lift with mirrors on three walls, stainless steel doors, dark brown carpet and a painted matte white ceiling.

Sally described how the light was reflected, absorbed and dispersed within the space. She did this by breaking her environment into the three dominate surfaces. She then spoke about one of the listed topics for each surface.

Sally supported her findings with information found on an academic data base.
