Faith Moves Mountains: An Appalachian Cervical Cancer Prevention Program What type of research is involved?

Faith Moves Mountains: An Appalachian Cervical Cancer Prevention Program
What type of research is involved? (ie. what?s the purpose?is it
descriptive, exploratory, explanatory or some combination thereof?)

Qu1.
Ans:
This is a community based participatory research that involves community faith-based organizations, community members and institution conducting a community based health education and promotion program to reduce health disparity for apalachian women . The research was approve by the university IRB review board and all necessary requirements such as respect for participants, justice, beficience were respected.

The participants comprised of apalachian women especially between the ages of 40-60 years. The purpose can be summarise as
? To identify barriers faced by medically underserved apalachian women access to culturally tailored education about primary health care knowledge on cervical cancer and recommended continuous follow-up care after a visit to a community health center, quantify the importance of the barriers in hindering access to follow-up care, and quantify the patient characteristics associated with those barriers.
The health education and promotion program used a combination of descriptive, exploratortory and explanatory methods.

2. Provide a statement of the research question(s) that is (are) the focus of the
research in the article/project/grant.

Ans:
Focus of the Comummunty based participatory research using helth education promotion are
? To identify access to primary care barriers facing apalachian women (40-64) on cervical cancer and pap smear as perceived by the apalachian women.

? To identify access to primary care barriers facing apalachian women (40-64) on cervical cancer and pap smear as perceived by the church leaders, members of the community (LHA) and members of faith based organization and instution conducting the CBPR.

? To describe the prevalence of barriers faced by the community in general.

? To identify the apalachian women characteristics (personal, interpersonal, and environmental) that exacerbate the effects of the barriers.

? Describe, through contrast and compare, various barriers as perceived by women, community members and institutions.

3. Is there a conceptual or theoretical framework that establishes the context for
the proposed research? What is it(are they)?
Ans:
Several conceptual or theoretical framework were applied in the context of the CBPR. They are
1. Precede-Proceed model
2. Social cognitive theory
3. And CBPR
The precede-proceed model was used to identify predisposing factors to the women to influence the health disparity. These include enabling, reinforcing, and need that created barrier to primary care access to cervical cancer and pap smear receipt. These include health behaviors positive interpersonal, personal and environmental factors.
The Social Cognitive Theory was used in the case where community members such as the Lay Health advisors developed tailored traditional program that educated the women about cervical cancer and pap smear receipt. The LHA helped to translate the educational program to be more culturally meaningful to the participants
The Community based participatory program was used to allow the University to collaborate with the faith based organizations, members of the community, and participants to work together for a common goal.

4. What measurements are used to quantify the research inquiry (ie. nominal vs.
operational definitions of the concepts)?
Ans:
This was a community based participatory project in combination with precede ? proceed model and the social cognitive theory. In CBPR the community members are normally trained to quantify the research inquiry. The research indicated that the evaluation involved a mixed method approach to quantify that data. These consist of qualitative and quantitative approach.
The qualitative analysis includes personal interviews and questions that consists of satisfaction survey, increase of knowledge on cervical cancer and receipt of Pap test. The study also conducted exit surveys on randomly selected participants, LHAs, and key informants to determine program satisfaction. The study also indicated that the initial intended random sampling was not successful. For example a lot of mails were returned. As such, the study adapted a convenience sample by knocking on people?s door to conduct interviews.
