Film Analysis: In this essay, you will analyze the rhetoric of a documentary film, specifically its purpose, audience, persuasive appeals, and its effectiveness. Essentially, you are analyzing the arguments that the filmmaker makes, how he/she develops the arguments, and the extent to which the filmmaker is successful in achieving the purpose. Your 6-7 page paper (double spaced) should demonstrate: (1) your understanding of how the filmmaker presents his/her case (e.g., statistics, expert testimony, humor, music, motivational appeals) and (2) your understanding of particular theoretical concepts. Terminology from your textbook and lecture is expected.
Use the following format guidelines:
Introduction (brief summary or outline of overall paper that includes preview of themes/main points AND thesis statement) (1/2 to 1 pg)
Summarize the documentary film (1 pg)
Analysis section (detailed explanation and application of your concepts to the film; identify specific scenes from film to demonstrate the concepts in action) (3-4 pgs)
Conclusion (restatement of thesis, summary/recap of findings, sense of closure) (1/2 to 1 pg)
Cite sources in text in APA format. Attach a reference sheet (does NOT count towards paper length requirement).
Please make sure to answer the following in your analysis:
What is the goal of this film? How well did the producer/director achieve this goal? Why do you think so?
Who was the intended audience? How do you know? What is the audience expected to do after viewing this film?
What are persuasive techniques used by the filmmaker? Identify, define, and explain 5 (five) techniques and how they functioned in the film. Make sure to clearly highlight what scene in the film demonstrates this technique. Evaluate its effectiveness.
Are there communicative theories of persuasion that can explain your interpretation of the film? Identify and explain them. (Hint: You want to demonstrate that you are able to apply your newly acquired theoretical knowledge about persuasion to a text.)
Are there any fallacies (faulty reasoning) in the film? If so, explain how they were used in the film.
