Identify data you will need to accomplish your research objectives and report where you will obtain it (1-4 double spaced pages). Add their sources to your list of references and attach the revised list.

After determining data you believe you can use, write a preliminary discussion:
• Describe the data. Write a short paragraph (2-3 sentences) on each variable citing its source, describing key features (including the data period [beginning and ending day, month, or year], data interval [e.g., monthly, quarterly, or annual], and observation unit [e.g, individual, household, county, state, or national]), and explaining how you think you will use the data in your analysis. Also provide an intuitive short label you will use for the variable in the statistical estimation and reporting results. It is often helpful to prepare a summary data description table such as Table 1 below. The data actually used in the empirical estimation should be summarized in a summary statistics table such as Table 2 below. This is a good time to start that table.
• To facilitate writing your research paper, you can group variables in the discussion. For example, you can group closely related independent variables, variables collected from the same source, or variables measuring roughly the same concept.
• Note special features of a variable. For example binary and categorical variables are special types and are treated in special ways, depending on whether they are dependent or independent variables.
Finally, briefly discuss any needs for additional data and sources you are exploring.
