GIS

GIS

1. Organisation & Context

The aim of this project is to be a student-centred piece of research work which will pull together a range of skills and learning from across the GIS section of the course. It will also form (with the substantial projects from the other three modules) part of a wider portfolio of research outputs. Most importantly it is an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge or apply their existing knowledge to a piece of GIS research.

2. Advisory Guide to Project Content.

There is a completely free student choice of topic around a subject of your choosing. The most important aspect is that this be a piece of work which interests you, will help develop your GIS skills and knowledge and which will be feasible/achievable in a relatively short period of seven to eight weeks.

As previously mentioned, options might include;
• Work based on specific applied student interest or experience;
• A Technical Project that will develop student’s own knowledge, especially in the broad area of Internet-GIS;
• A project based-on and developing previous work experience;
• A mentored project via any of the University’s research centres including the NCG, NIRSA or the Geography Department. This may even be extended beyond the University walls if you have a good working relationship with an external research centre or institution;
• A project based on core data sets available through the department. These might include Census data, Historical GIS, OSi data or GeoDirectory. Students would be expected to devise and frame a project based on these datasets.

Any other project which the student feels is manageable and for which they can provide a convincing project proposal will also be acceptable.

3. Process: Proposal, Format and Length of Project

As part of any working environment, good practice in relation to project work is to consider the project carefully in advance and write up a short, focused Project Proposal. You will be expected in this two-page proposal to identify a title, a rationale and context for your work, a list of the data and methods you are likely to employ and a guide to the kinds of results/outcomes you think you might find.

The submitted project should be in a professional Report Format. The length of the report is not proscriptive as it will depend on the work that people are engaged in. A suggested maximum length would be around 4-5,000 words plus images and appendices but there is some flexibility around this. There will be an expectation of professional quality in the final report, much as one would expect from a piece of consultancy. This should include an executive summary, proper section design and you should also use standard formatting and referencing styles. While Harvard is one system recommended by the Department, you are free to use others. The main function is to be consistent in whatever format you use.
