You are required to propose a (1) topic of research and (2) the
Research Question/s relating to governance, which must be
submitted for approval by the course Unit Coordinator.
The research essay has two purposes. The first is to help you
develop skills in the design, preparation and execution of a
research project. The essay is the final product of the project.
Secondly, it is a major contributor to the assessment of your
success in fulfilling the objectives of this Unit.

Assignment 2 is to be prepared as if for publication in a peerreviewed
journal. A list of some suitable journals is provided, but
you may nominate another journal.
A research essay is intended to define and address a research
question. Your research question is a statement of what you
intend to investigate and answer. Choose a problem to which
you do not yet know the answer. It is more than a descriptive
essay. In addressing the research question it may set out to test
a hypothesis i.e. a supposition made as a starting-point for
further investigation from known facts (The Australian Concise
Oxford Dictionary, 2nd ed. 1992).
The Q Manual provides excellent guidance on how to structure
and write such an essay – refer to sections: 4.0 Academic

Your proposal should be on a topic relating to governance.
Please limit your proposal to a one or two paragraph outline. It
should explain the issue – an aspect or a particular example of
governance and state the research question in one simple
sentence, followed by an explanation of the question that the
essay will address. Nominate the peer-reviewed journal for which
the assignment will be written and provide the URL for the
journal’s Guidelines or Notes for contributors/authors.
Try to choose a topic relevant to your work or other interests.
Look for a topic which will involve you in conducting research to
define, describe and analyse how that example of governance
operates, and which is relatively simple and straightforward – you
are limited to approximately 5,000 words! It is best to choose a
topic for which references and information will be readily
available to you. If you would like more advice on defining a topic,
