SOME GUIDANCE FOR QUALITY DISCUSSION
• Your comment should teach us something relevant to the topic under discussion. In addition to teaching others, its useful to help apply it to your work setting or life, but posts shouldn’t be only “my opinion” or “my experience” without any substantive, new information. When I see “I think” or “In my experience” in a post, a red flag goes up. I always look first for new information having “teaching” value.
• Your subject should be a complete sentence, and should convey the main point of your comment. You will lose one or two points every time your subject is not adequate.
• It’s a college course! The discussions should be written in an appropriately academic way, and proof read for typographical errors and correct grammar/punctuation.
• “Copying and Pasting” content from a website is not discussing!!! If you to use website information to emphasize a point you must cite the source and use quote marks to indicate material you are using from that source. Discussion comments should be primarily your own words – not material you copy-paste.
• I look for several specific attributes in a four-point post. The comment must be accurate, relevant, original, teach us something, and be well written. The subject must be a complete sentence which summarizes the main point of the comment. I also look for documentation when appropriate, web citations with functioning links, and personal experiences when appropriate. Copy/pasted content is disregarded, as is content substantially paraphrased. I also consider the flow of the discussion thread, to see if the post is a reasonable response and is properly contexed. To the extent that a post is missing some of these attributes, it will likely be downgraded to a ‘3’, ‘2’, ‘1’, or ‘0’ rating. And, even when all of this is factored in, my ratings are still subjective. If I like it, I will probably rate it higher than if I don’t.
• Probably the most important factor is whether or not I think the readers of the post will learn from it.
