Human Development Measurements using the Capabilities Approach

Purpose:

To study the concept of capabilities approach as developed by A. Sen and M. Nussbaum. Nobel Prize winner A. Sen has helped to make the capabilities approach the foundation of the indices created by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to measure human development. The series of indices to measure human development created by UNDP, in addition to income includes achievements in health and education.

Objectives :

1. To understand why the Human Development Reports are based on the concept of capabilities approach
2. To evaluate and contrast other ways in which human economic development can be measured
