Develop the case study report using the required structure below. The purpose of the case study report is to demonstrate your ability to apply principles and concepts of special education to a practical situation.
Part A: Profile of needs

Part C: Evaluation of student’s position in relation to inclusive education
Evaluate this student’s position in relation to their engagement in inclusive education. You may like to address the following questions: What are the benefits and challenges for inclusion in this case (consider the full range of stakeholders)? To what degree do the philosophies and practices of special education and inclusion complement (or conflict) in this situation? To what degree has inclusion been a successful educational response for this student – why or why not? What recommendations or further steps towards inclusion would you suggest for this case?

Preparing and presenting the assignment

The document is a case study report and not a formal essay, thus an introduction and conclusion are not required. Be sure to demonstrate a scholarly approach in your document – evidence and reference your points and arguments, and avoid unsubstantiated opinion. Like Assignment 1, it is expected that you will make many references to the course materials (e.g., text, selected/supplementary readings, study modules), but additionally for Assignment 2, it is also expected that you will engage in independent research to identify some additional references. Ensure that any additional sources you cite as evidence are credible and relevant

Part A

Here is my suggestion for a break down:

1. Provide a brief description of specific information from the video (what do we know about the case study student’s condition? age? school name?).  You can put in this list from like the example profiles.
2. Provide a general description of the condition, using literature from the course and information that you may find from other sources (e.g. Hearing/Vision Australia, etc). This can take the form of a narrative, but should not be too extensive.
3. Return to the case study student, and describe their strengths. It would be very useful to compose this section so it describes the student’s: (1) cognitive, (2) socio-emotional, and (3) physical strengths.
4. Now describe the case study student’s challenges.  Once again think about the student’s: (1) cognitive, (2) socio-emotional, and (3) physical strengths.
5. Is there any other important information to mention that is specially about the presenting condition, or the strengths and challenges that the case study student presents?

 

 

 

PART C

it is important to remember that the goal of this section is to “evaluate” how well the inclusive approach has worked for a case-study student, and then make recommendations for improving the approach for this student (not specific strategies that were discussed in part two).  So this is not a general discussion about inclusion, but a review of how the inclusive approach has worked for the case study student.

As you evaluate the case and offer your recommendations, you may find that you discuss the perspective of teachers, parents, or peers, but please remember to tie this back to the case study student.  For example, instead of making a general statement such as “the classroom teacher requires more training in mobility training or using adaptive technologies”, be sure to link such statments back to the student, for example “To improve Rosie’s participation in and understanding of whole classroom instruction, the teacher would benefit from participating in further professional development activities related to the use of adaptive technologies.  Researchers have asserted that providing “just-in-time” professional development activities for teachers of hearing impaired students improves the quality of instruction, and promotes a more inclusive environment … etc”.  So a paragraph in this section should identify a key point (positive or negative) related to how well inclusion works for the case study student, provide an evaluation of the key point, provide a recommendation to address the key point (this could be to continue if the approach is working with respect to the key point), and link to research/theory/accepted practice (references) to support your evaluation.

So what are some of the things that I would consider (not a complete list, but this should provide a good start):

• the quality of the instruction for the case study student (a quick link back to part two may help, but should present an overall evaluation of the instruction)
• the relevance of the classroom curriculum (does the student require a different curriculum considering age, future educational choices)
• considering the diversity of students in the class, do you have suggestions for how the teacher will plan and teach to cater for the difference between students?
• the process to plan for the student (who was involved, who should be involved)
• the support provided to key stakeholders, that directly or indirectly support the case study student (e.g. disability awareness program for peers, PD for teachers, parental support programs, etc)
• the adequacy of resources to support the student (e.g. human resources, financial, etc)
• an overall evaluation of the school environment (not just the classroom … e.g. is the school easy to navigate for a visually impaired student)
• the future steps … will the current approach be appropriate for the next educational environment (think in terms of the student and the environment)? What about the student’s transition to a new educational context (what needs to be done to prepare, and has this been addressed)?
• Other key points?
• An overall concluding comment

As you can see by this list, I did not group the issues around stakeholders, but themes related to inclusion.  Within each theme you can evaluate how an aspect of inclusion has or has not worked well for the student, draw upon on literature, and perhaps discuss how the theme is related to stakeholders (may not be relevant to some points).  While you may like to use a table, however it would probably be easier to write this section as a narrative, with a paragraph dedicated to key points/themes.

One final point that may assist you to distinguish between Part Two and Three.  Part three requires you to analyse what specific strategies are used to support the case study student’s cognitive, social, and physical development.  In your analysis you will identify what strategies are used to address the student’s specific learning/developmental needs (so a process of identifying and linking), discussing the strategies (analysis which may require you to refer to literature), and then to propose any additional strategies that you feel would help the student within the context. So part two is an analysis of the educational strategies used to support the case study student.  Part three is an evaluation of inclusion, which requires you to think about the broader goals of inclusion, how well the approach is working for the case-study student, and to reach a conclusion about whether the approach has worked for the case-study student (yes/no).  You may also like to consider if the student would benefit from continuing to be educated in an inclusive environment in the future (consider the context of future educational environments, future demands for study/work, etc).  So consideration of how the inclusive approach is working for the student now, but also for their future education and development would be an excellent discussion to include.
