My goal for language study is to be fluent in spoken and written Hindi, by the end of June. This might seem like a lofty goal, but it is attainable. This is achievable for several reasons. First, the combined domestic and overseas proposed study program total one year. This gives me adequate time, to attain fluency. The intense summer program of SASLI covers both elementary and intermediate Hindi which is the currently ranked as the number two language immersion program in the united states. as stated in my study proposal, even though i speak Urdu, i prefer to start at the beginning level to ensure that i have a solid foundation in written, spoken, and grammar. I plan on maintaining and progressing my language acquisition skills by being tutored privatley during the fall semester at the intermediate level and taking a special studies class designed specifically to ensure that i am progressing in my langauage aquistion skills.
At the same time, I have grown up in Karachi Pakistan till the age of five, coupled with numerous family trips, and medical missionary work, I have maintained the ability to speak Urdu. This is a language similar to Hindi. It is important to note that I have no formal education in Urdu. I have learned the language and maintained my fluency on my own. This is mostly due to the fact that there are not classes available in Oklahoma for Urdu while I was growing up, or during my undergraduate, or medical education this was not available to me, inside or outside of school, for either Hindi or Urdu.
I plan to maintain and keep advancing my language skills. First, I feel that since I did not have the availability to take classes growing up, I will volunteer and teach Hindi in conjunction with the Universityof Oklahoma-Norman Campus as an Teachers assitant for the newly created hindi courses. Furthermore our metropolitan library system has a program in which speakers can go during certain times to practice their conversational skills. This has not been available in Hindi, I have contacted them, and with enough signatures, I have had a successful petition to start a class for Hindi starting this fall. I will continue to participate in that class, when I return. I also plan on applying for a teaching position with the Fulbright in India.
Hindi language acquisition is essential for my academic internship, and carerr goals.. In order to develop relationships for my academic internship,a nd to understand the culture, and problems, and complexity I’d the region, acquisition of Hindi is vital. It is essential that I acquire the ability to communicate with those lvingninrural areas intheirown native language. My previous preparation in Hindi has been very limited due to the fact that there are few formal resources available. I have intiated some self study through available on line resources at the local livrary. but this cannot take the place of formal training.in

My academic internship allows me to practice what I have learned inside the class room, in a real world context. After my year long language immersion I expect to be fluent in speaking and listening, with high-intermediate or advanced proficiency in writing and reading.
