Writer’s Guidelines: Comparison and Contrast
1. Purpose: During the exploration of your topic, define your purpose clearly.
a. Decide whether you are writing a work that is primarily comparison, primarily contrast or
balanced (balanced is best).
b. Determine whether your main purpose is to inform or to persuade.
2. Points:
a. Indicate your points of comparison or contrast, perhaps by listing.
b. Eliminate irrelevant points.
3. Pattern:
a. Select the subject-by-subject (block) or the point-by-point (alternating) pattern after
considering your topic and planned treatment. The point-by-point pattern is usually
preferred in essays. Only in long papers is there likely to be a mixture of patterns.
b. Compose an outline reflecting the pattern you select.
c. Use this basic subject-by-subject pattern:
I. Subject X
A. Point 1
B. Point 2
II. Subject Y
A. Point 1
B. Point 2
d. Use this basic point-by-point pattern:
I. Point 1
A. Subject X
B. Subject Y
II. Point 2
A. Subject X
B. Subject Y
4. Presentation:
a. Be sure to give each point more or less equal treatment. Attention to each part of the
outline will usually ensure balanced development.
b. Use transitional words and phrases to indicate comparison and contrast and to establish
coherence. Some transitional markers are phrases such as although, even though, while,
just as, similarly, afterwards, in conclusion, and conversely.
c. For your essay, use a carefully stated topic sentence for each paragraph and a clear thesis
statement that should be in your introductory paragraph. Each developmental paragraph
should have a topic sentence broad enough to embrace its content. Be sure to include a
concluding statement in your concluding paragraph.

Raising a child and owning a dog are amazing experiences. It is a common desire among
many people to have a child or to own a dog, and it is exciting to be a part of either adventure.
However, these endeavors can also prove to be challenging. Each undertaking is meant only for
those who can make the commitment to fulfilling the necessary responsibilities. The expenses of
caring for a child are far greater than those of caring for a dog, but the happiness created by
either one is always wonderful.
Caring for a child is very expensive, for a young person has numerous needs. First of all,
a child must have proper health care. This includes the child receiving vaccines required to
ensure that he/she does not become seriously ill. Obtaining an education in a public school is
free, as opposed to the high costs of attending a private school. However, a child must buy
school supplies often, and this expense can escalate over the years. One particular item that can
significantly lighten the wallet of a child’s parent is food. People need to eat everyday, but a
growing child needs to eat more often to ensure that he or she receives proper nutrients. So, this
means that numerous visits to the grocery store may be required, as well as plenty of money.
While the expenses of raising a child are high, the costs of caring for a dog are not.
The total expenses included in caring for a dog are relatively inexpensive. Some costs
can be a bit high, such as procedures at the veterinarian, but on the whole, caring for a dog does
not require the owner to have a huge supply of cash. When visiting the veterinarian, dogs need
various vaccines. The guardian of a canine may also choose to have the dog spayed or neutered.
These measures can be expensive, but are essential to prevent illnesses and unwanted puppies.
Even when including these few necessities, the total cost for ensuring the health and safety of a
dog is quite inexpensive. Most dog food is sold for sensible prices at grocery stores; however, 9 – C/C Essay Assignment, Sykes
some specialty foods can be more costly. These specialty items include food for puppies or older
dogs with specific diet needs, so these animals can have healthy and happy lives.
The happiness and joy that a parent receives while caring for a child is irreplaceable since
nurturing a young person can be an incredible adventure. A baby is totally adorable, and as a
child grows older, parents notice similarities between their own appearances and that of the
child. One exciting part of caring for a child is seeing common features he or she may have,
such as the same hair or eye color as that of a parent. Teaching a child and playing with him or
her can provide unique experiences. Some of these include teaching a child how to eat and to
speak, or how to read and to ride a bike. These activities, as well as playing games such as hideand-seek or checkers, can also be fun and entertaining. Just as children love to play, so do dogs
love to romp and have fun with their owners.
Caring for a dog can offer a genuine experience. Dogs really enjoy playing, and it is vital
that an owner play with the dog to maintain his or her happiness. Engaging in activities with a
dog can be exciting for the owner as well. Some of these activities include playing fetch,
jogging in a park, or even simply petting a dog. Sustaining a dog’s happiness by playing with
him or her can be a pleasure unlike any other; this is because it strengthens the bond between the
dog and the owner. No matter what, a dog always seems to have love for people, especially for
the person who cares for him or her.
Caring for a child can be much more expensive than caring for a dog, but the delights
that arise from either experience are always distinctive. Whether someone is caring for a child or
caring for a dog, the adventure is matchless. This is true despite the responsibilities and
challenges, such as purchasing the proper supplies necessary for caring for either of them. 10 – C/C Essay Assignment, Sykes
Caring for a child is an aspiration of many people, such as soon-to-be-parents, and caring for a
dog is lots of fun. Raising a child and owning a dog are equally marvelous experiences.
