Experience #1: Death of his father: Malcolm X’s memories of the death of his father illustrated an important theme throughout his autobiography: violence. Threatened by Earl Little’s preaching of Garveyism, local whites often harassed the Little family forcing them to move around from one town to another. In one incident, Malcolm X recalled having to witness local whites burn down his family home while the police and firefighters stood around to watch. Although he did not witness his father’s death, the rumor of the Black Legionaires bashing his father head in and leaving him to die on the tracks caused Malcolm X to examine the injustice his family had suffered from. Racism and violence not only had plagued Malcolm X’s youth but the daily lives of African-Americans and with little protection from local enforcements, Malcolm X preached that blacks had no other option but to defend themselves and reject integration. Rather than seeking help from whites, Malcolm X advocated for the very same ideas his father had preached about: self-reliance, self-respect, and ultimately black independence.
