Management

You have recently been hired as the Human Resources (HR) Manager for a medium-sized company that employs 25 full time staff. Your predecessor was forced to resign; however, you are unsure of the circumstances. Your only knowledge of the HR Department is that the condition of the department is “less than favorable.”

The Vice-President of the company has given you the following directive: improve staff morale, enhance training, and build an HR Department that is compliant with all required rules and

assume that you have now had a chance to interview all 25 full time staff and are in the process of compiling your results. Based on the interviews, compile your responses into categories and subcategories. (You are to pretend as though you have actual responses from your staff.) For example:
1. 62% of respondents indicated that they need additional training.
a. 30% of the 62% need computer training; (subcategory)
b. 32% of the 62% need communication training. (subcategory)
2. 75% of respondents indicated that they are unhappy with the performance review process.
3. 47% of respondents indicated a fear of losing their job in the next 6 months.
4. 38% of respondents would like to see the company offer a more comprehensive insurance package.
a. 34% would like to have short-term and long-term disability (subcategory)
b. 38% would like to have a simple life insurance policy (subcategory)
c. 30% would like to have more dental benefits. (subcategory)

The categories and subcategories MUST be based on the questions (and assumed answers) that you created in Case Study #1.provide at least 8 categories with 4 of the 8 categories containing subcategories.

: Based on the categories and subcategories above, you are to then create a detailed plan for addressing the concerns and challenges that staff shared with you during their interviews. For example:
1. Because 62% of respondents indicated that they need additional training, the HR Department is planning to offer monthly training. Staff will be required to attend.
2. Because 75% of respondents indicated that they are unhappy with the performance review process, the HR Department is planning to create an internal ad-hoc team who will research alternate forms of performance review and present the findings to the HR Manager.
3. Because 47% of respondents indicated a fear of losing their job in 6 months, the HR Department must explore ways to improve morale.
4. Because 38% of respondents would like to see the company offer a more comprehensive insurance package, the HR Department is planning to conduct an assessment to determine what, if any, additional insurance options can be offered.

provide a 4-step action plan for addressing the concerns and challenges that staff shared during the interview process. The 4-step action plan must be specific and contain a detailed outline of how you plan to meet your goals.
For example, if one of your 4-steps is to develop and offer monthly staff training, you would need to provide a detailed schedule of when training is to be offered, what topics will be discussed, who will lead the training, and what activities you plan to incorporate into the training. (

Task Three: Finally, in preparation for your meeting with Senior Management, list 5-7 anticipated objections and responses to your 4-step action plan. For example:
Anticipated Questions from Management:
1. We can’t afford to offer and pay for training.
a. Your Response: I understand that we are on a tight budget; however, we have two staff that have offered to conduct internal training free of charge. Additionally, without training, chances of improving morale and creating a stronger, more productive company are limited at best. If we have the resources available, why not utilize them?
2. Why should we change the way we have been evaluating staff? We have done it the same way for 10 years!
a. Your Response: As Management indicated in my first meeting, one of the goals of the HR Department is to improve morale. We can begin this process by allowing staff the chance to determine how they would like to be evaluated. If they do not agree with or fully understand the process, how can they hope to achieve the goals that we set for them?
3. Morale-who needs it?
a. Your Response: We do! Very often, it is the subtle changes that can improve morale and create a sense of ownership. Once a month, maybe we can consider a gift-card drawing for perfect attendance.
