CASE DESCRIPTION (OR BACKGROUND INFORMATION)
Performance Assessment: Business Portfolio
For this assignment, you will create a portfolio that includes samples of messages commonly written by business professionals. In addition to written communications, your portfolio will include a video presentation. Each student’s portfolio will contain six sections. All written assignments should be submitted in one document with title pages separating the five sections. The written assignments must be submitted as an MS Word document or PDF document. All written assignments should be written using proper grammar and formatted with a title page, one inch margins, indented paragraphs, and any references should be formatted using APA.
PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
Section 1: Communication Plan
Assignment: Identify an individual with whom you would like to more effectively communicate. The individual could be a supervisor at work, an employee that you supervise, a co-worker, teammate, customer, sales representative, or colleague. Develop a strategy for improving communication between you and the individual identified. In Section 1 of your portfolio, you will write a 3-5 page plan for improving communication with this individual. Your plan should include the following:
a. A brief description of the individual and a brief explanation of your relationship with the individual identified;
b. The issues/challenges with communicating with this individual;
c. The desired outcomes for improving the communication process;
d. An action plan for improving communication, including activities and target dates for the activities;
e. A description of how you will measure the success of the plan.
Section 2: Executive Summary
Assignment: Write a 2-page executive summary for the president of your company. Select a government report, industry report, or white paper on a topic affecting the company where you currently work or plan to work in the future. Analyze the information in the report and write a 2- page summary for the president of the company. Your report should include the following information:
a. The title of the report, author, and date published
b. A summary of key points in the report
c. An explanation of how the information can be used by the company
d. An analysis of the quality of the report including:
i. Quality of the source
ii. Potential bias
iii. Credibility of the author
iv. Currency of the information
v. Completeness of the information
vi. Accuracy of the report
e. A copy of the report or a link to the website where the report is posted.
Section 3: Business Report
Assignment: Write a 6-8 page business report that addresses a problem, issue, or opportunity for the company where you work or aspire to work. Examples of topics for the paper include: A process or procedure that can be improved on, a solution to an organizational problem, an evaluation of a new technology that can improve organizational effectiveness, the effects of a new trend or issue on the company or suggested response to a competitor’s product or service. The paper should include the following sections:
a. Introduction – Overview of the organization
b. Description of the problem, issue or opportunity and its potential effect on the ?organization
c. Facts, statistics or results of studies on the problem, issue or opportunity
d. Discussion of potential courses of action with advantages, disadvantages, costs and ?benefits for each course of action
e. Criteria for evaluating alternatives
f. Methods for evaluating the effectiveness of the solution
g. Conclusion and recommendation for next steps
h. Supporting reasons for the recommendations
Section 4: Routine Business Writing
Assignment: Write a series of routine business messages. For each of the scenarios below, write a message. You may select the appropriate medium (memo, letter, e-mail, etc.) for the message.
a. Introduce one of your company’s products or services to a potential customer
b. Respond to a complaint from a dissatisfied customer
c. Request a manager within your company take action on a problem/issue
d. Give a new employee constructive feedback on his or her performance
e. Provide a reference letter for a co-worker for a promotion to a managerial position within the company
