Meteorological Conditions and Pollutant Dispersion Modeling
The local meteorology and topography play an important role in how pollutants are
transported and dispersed. When using computer-based air pollution dispersion models
to estimate or predict downwind concentrations of air pollutants meteorological
conditions must be known and depending on the model, topography is also considered.
The overall goal for this task will be to use emissions inventory data and an air pollution
dispersion model to create pollution roses.
The dispersion model used for this project is relative easy to learn and simple to use. It
is referred to as a ?Screening Model? and its input data for meteorology and topography
are not extensive. Although this model prevents us from conducting a rigorous
modeling of how air pollutants are transported and dispersed, screening models are
typically the first models used because they provide a relative quick understanding of
how air pollution is being dispersed. The use of a screening model is an acceptable
approach for conducting preliminary investigations.
