Select any international issue/ Current Global issue which has a Multi-party Prisoners Dilemma structure and apply the lessons from the simulation in order to propose specific ideas about strategies and approaches that may help to achieve the best outcome.

Students will select a current global issue to address in their individual case studies from the point of view of their own disciplinary major (s), but they must also refer to and where applicable use other interdisciplinary perspectives in their analysis. The framework of analysis to be used will be the Multi-party prisoners dilemma as discussed in class. The topic chosen for the research paper should not the same as that being addressed in their group’s simulation. It is suggested that students discuss their choice of topic well in advance of the due date with their tutor/and or the unit coordinator.

Preparation:
•Step 1 – Choose your current global issue
•Step 2 – Choose the key actors involved (at least 3 parties/states involved)
•Step 3 – Think about what each actor’s strategy is
•Plan your essay according to the marking criteria
•See point 5 of marking criteria – [Reference to class simulations & analysis of lessons learned from them)
—In the essay, reflect on whether cooperation was achieved and also whether the outcomes were achieved during the Group Simulation (Senkaku island dispute). [Our tutor said that to write about this in the MPPD essay, one paragraph after the introduction would be good]
o Think about who "cooperated" and who "defected"
o What strategies did each actor/country apply? (cooperation, defection, tit-for-tat)
o How was cooperation achieved? Don’t refer to your individual country role but what the group did together
• Make an analysis of the issue/topic. In the conclusion, think about what will happen in the future regarding the issue
• Research the issue – what has been happening in the past few years or decades?
• Conclusion – you can mention another theory to say (for example) "the Prisoner’s Dilemma works/doesn’t work because…" and "A more appropriate theory for the topic would be…"

Choose of Topics:
•Cannot be the same as the Simulation topic —- Disputed between China and Japan about Senkaku Island
•It must be a ‘current global issue’
•The topic must be an "iterated" series of negotiations (there must be many rounds of negotiations about the topic). The negotiations could be finite (having a set number of negotiations) or infinite (ongoing negotiations until a decision is made)
•The topic must be based on real negotiations, or negotiations that have already occurred

o Syria and regional security
