nature of the key organisation perspectives

nature of the key organisation perspectives

• Develop your understanding of the nature of the key organisation perspectives and their related theories. Demonstrate an understanding of the key perspectives and the meta-theoretical assumptions that underpin each

• Demonstrate an appreciation of the relationship between perspectives and their respective theories.

• Develop research skills and the ability to assess the strengths and weaknesses of various debates and arguments.

• Gain skills in the written presentation of an argument, including the ways in which scholars incorporate and acknowledge the ideas of other writers

Criteria for assessment:

For this assignment your essay will be assessed on the extent to which it demonstrates:
Your ability to write a clear, compelling, well-presented and properly referenced argument.
Your ability to provide a clear and direct response to the question asked.
QUESTION:

“The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment.” Warren G. Bennis (American Business Professor)

Technology will determine the future for organisations.

Discuss how each of the perspectives would respond to this statement and why they hold different views.

Essential Readings (Research):

1. Hatch with Cunliffe, (2013), Chapters 2 and 5.
Chapter 2 provides an overview of the meta-theoretical underpinnings/assumptions of each of the key perspectives you are to use in answering the question. These assumptions explain WHY theorists from the different perspectives see the world/organisations differently. It also explains HOW they see the world/organisations.

Chapter 5 applies the perspectives outlined in Chapter 2 to an examination of technology in organisations.

Collectively these two chapters provide the material that will provide solid foundations for your answer.

2. Volti, R., (2006), Society and Technological Change, Fifth Edition, Worth, New York, pp. 271-274 and 287-295.

This reading explores the relationship between humans and machines (technology) over pages 271-274 through a consideration of technological determinism. Over pages 287-295 consideration is given to the role of technology in organisations.

3. Volti, R., (2012), An Introduction to the Sociology of Work and Occupations, Sage, Thousand Oaks, pp.77-94.

This reading provides a further exploration of the relationship between humans and technology.

4. Wajcman, J., (2002), “Addressing Technological Change: The Challenge to Social Theory”, Current Sociology, 50:347, pp.347-362.

This reading revisits many of the themes explored in the previous readings but also gives consideration to some aspects of critical theory (technology as ideology) and the postmodern (Actor Network Theory) perspectivesas well as gender.

You must read these articles and engage with their arguments. This engagement must be used as a basis for your answer to the question; you must read and use these readings to shape your answer. A failure to do this will severely undermine your capacity to gain a pass mark.

You may supplement these readings with others but they must be used as well as not instead of the above readings.
Answering the Question:

In answering the question you will need to engage with the nature of the various perspectives and how each views the relationship between technology and organisations.

You must focus explicitly on the key issues identified in the question.

You must consider at least three of the four perspectives.

A failure to follow this and the following instructions will have a significant negative impact on your marks.

In this section you must provide an overview of your answer to the question; provide answers to the key what and why questions of your argument/answer. These should take the form of direct responses to the key issues raised by the question. Your argument should be informed by a critical analysis/engagement with the content of the essential readings.

Please keep in mind that in all sections of your response you must move past description to analysis, this means providing answers to the why questions that emerge from your key statements.
Exploration of your argument:
In this section of the essay you need to accomplish two tasks.

First, you must explore the key perspectives showing how each has different views on the role of technology in organisations, what these views are and why they hold them.

Second, having demonstrated an understanding of the perspectives and their theoretical approaches to the role of technology you then need to use these to explore the issue raised by the question; will technology determine the future of organisations? In other words what does each of the perspectives have to say on this issue and why do they say it? What criticisms do they offer of each other and why?

You can address the above, two tasks sequentially by beginning with an exploration of the how and why of the perspectives and then use this to explore the positions advanced by each of the perspectives, modernist, symbolic interpretivist, critical theory and postmodernism as they relate to the role of technology in organisations. In your essay, you must consider at least three of the four perspectives.

An alternative approach is to integrate the exploration of the how and why of each perspective and its application to the role of technology. For example; explore the how and why of the modernist position and its application to modernist arguments concerning the role of technology. On completing the how and why of the modernist position and its application move on to each of the other perspectives in turn.

The two alternatives outlined above will enable you to present a clear direct and disciplined response to the question.

The whole response must be informed by an engagement with essential readings. You must draw upon and evaluate academic debates and arguments. This is not to be viewed as an exercise in which you make up a response off-the-top-of-your-head nor is it one in which you focus on description and ignore analysis. You should also avoid drawing on case studies of actual organisations. What you should focus on is the theoretical aspects of the debatesconcerning the relationship between humans and technology; technological determinism and its critics.
Conclusion:
You must conclude with your general answer to the question. It should reiterate the key argument and answer to the question provided in the introduction and indicate to what extent it has been supported or challenged by your analysis of the debates and arguments of other authors.
