Assignment 1: Brief and guidance – an organisational case study

Case study
An organisation case study. Students to present their findings in teams (15%) and write an individual reflection of about 1,250 words (25%). Both marks are added, to give one grade for this first assignment of up to 40%.

This assignment is about operating a public leisure centre by a brand new organisation. You will design this new organisation. Details are in lecture 2.

Background
Your team is invited to operate a community leisure centre on behalf of the local council. The Council wants to achieve:
? More use, less cost- try to reduce cost
? Increased prestige for the borough and a greater feeling of community use
The Council will pay a subsidy to operate the services.

Team exercise and presentation
First name the organisation (no marks). Then outline details of your new organisation. This needs to include (one student leading on each topic):
1. The priority aims and objectives of the new company
? Why are they so important?
2. Should the Board of Directors consist of employees of the company or local worthies? Why? Local worthies are the great and good of the area, perhaps local company directors, well-known athletes, actors.- who would you have as board of directors, reason and why
3. Draw an organisation chart / family tree. What is the structure of the management team and all the staff? How many managers? Why?
4. What are the key elements of the informal structure? Can you influence these informal elements to help the company succeed? How, or why not?

For the presentation, prepare two slides per topic (1-4). First slide analyse relevant academic theory + reference(s). Second slide apply the theory / research to the topic. Use a large font-size for easy reading (and condensed thinking). Font 24 is good (18 for references). Use PowerPoint slides or paper, as you wish. No more than 15 minutes for the presentation. Allow up to 3 minutes for questions within the 15 minutes.

Provide brief supporting documents on five specific topics (one per student).

Outline marketing plan

First half page: analyse the relevant academic theories and research. Second half page: an actual brief outline example on the required topic. Arial font 12.
Produce a record of all your meetings:
? Date/time, who present, roles within the team, discussion topic(s)
? Assigned tasks with deadlines, outcomes, comments, individual views
Keep it brief (if possible: one side of A4 to cover all the meetings).
Hand in your brief supporting papers at the presentation.
