“Perceiving My Selves”

Goals:
? To explore how you perceive yourself, how you would like to be perceived, and how others may perceive you.
? To compare our perceptions of self with the perceptions of others.

Reasons for this assignment:
? To encourage you to actively seek out information about yourself from different sources.
? Increasing our self-awareness is a vital part of becoming more competent communicators in our work and personal lives.

How to complete this assignment:
• [Survey A]For each of the nine lists, indicate the one item that best represents how you perceive yourself — not your physical self, but your psychological and philosophical self. Mark these items MM (Myself to me).

• [Survey A] In each of the nine lists, select the one item that best represents how you would like to be. What items would your ideal self select? Mark these items MI (Myself as Ideal).

• [Survey B] Give the second sheet of nine lists to an important person in your life (parent, older child, best friend, sister, brother, spouse, significant other) and ask that person to check off the one item in each list that best represents you — not your physical self, but your psychological self. {NOTE: Do not show the person your own responses before they check off the items on the list.} Ask the person why they chose those items to represent you.

• Write up your survey experience according to the format outlined for encounter assignments (at least five pages, typed, double-spaced answering the 6 questions below) or give the speech answering the 6 questions below and get extra credit:

2. Describe your survey experience utilizing the words, concepts, and ideas from your reading assignments and class discussions (i.e.Johari Window, blind-self, open-self, etc).
