According to Gardner (2006), “Each intelligence must have an identifiable core operation or set of operations. . . . For example, one core of musical intelligence is the sensitivity to pitch relations, and one core of linguistic intelligence is the sensitivity to the phonological features of a language” (p. 7). Whereas MI Theory is basically cognitive or biological, learning styles and personality type are more process oriented. Gardner has attempted to separate MI theory from the concept of learning styles saying it is not possible to correlate them since MI is more about how the human mind works and other models are more sensory related (Armstrong, 2009). Nevertheless, the classroom teacher who is working to reach every child needs to thoughtfully consider styles and preferences in addition to intelligences when planning instruction.
