II.            Gender and Sex

Discuss the differences between sex and gender. What are gender roles and what are some common traits associated with mainstream gender roles in the U.S. and much of the rest of the world? Using specific examples, compare and contrast the evolutionary/biological and social/structural theories relating to the construction of gender.

How does socialization through the media, peers and schools contribute to gender inequality? What impact does pervasive gender inequality have on society?

 

III.            Social Change

Compare and contrast the functionalist and conflict theory perspectives in relation to social change. Thinking about social change, what are some of the benefits and drawbacks of functionalist and conflict theory?

What is the food scarcity fallacy and how is it related to Malthus’ ideas about population growth?

Using examples, identify and discuss at least two sources of social change. Which do you think is the most important source of social change and why? How would you organize a social movement to effect positive social change?
