“How have gender roles changed over the past 50 years? Do you view the changes as positive for both men and women?
Over the past fifty years gender roles have changed drastically. In the past, women heavily depended upon men, whom were the ones that brought the money onto table and were in charge of the household. Nowadays, women have their own financial resources. According to our textbook, Health The Basics, women "enjoy their own financial resources" due to the "increase in the divorce rates" (p.178). This shift is not only due to the increase of divorce rates, but education plays a major role. In the present everyone has the opportunity to obtain an education; therefore, women have taken advantage of getting an education and succeeding in the real world. As a result, some women have high paying jobs and their stability is better than many men. I view this as a positive change for both men and women because it creates competitive environment. I feel very happy because women have a chance to succeed and not depend upon those "machista" men.”
