You will choose one option from Part 2. Each question is its own essay. You should use your book for support for the essay questions. You may use the short hand in text type of MLA citations that you use for your literary analyses.

Note:
Label Part 1 for the first part, answer it; double space, label Part 2 for the second part, answer it. Submit one document.

Pay close attention to the texts you should use for each question. If the prompt asks you to use one Romantic and one Realist text, for example, and you use two Romantic texts, the highest grade you can receive is a 60 for answering a maximum of 2/3 of the prompt.

Part 1—You MUST write on this topic. (2pages for part 1)
Define the Gothic in your own words. Using that definition, chose one Romantic and one Realist text and write an essay that supports your definition. You will need to argue why the texts you chose fit into the definition of Gothic you have chosen (you may talk about an element of the Gothic, such as say, the Grotesque). You should have a thesis statement/a clearly articulated definition, and examples from two different texts that illustrate your definition and make an argument for why you believe they are Gothic texts.

Part 2—Chose one topic from below on which to write. Only choose ONE topic from the two below. (2pages for Part 2)
1. Define Romanticism in your own words. Using that definition, choose two texts from the Romanticism unit and write an essay that supports your definition. You will need to argue why the texts you chose are “Romantic” texts. This should be a well thought out answer. You should have a thesis statement/a clearly articulated definition, and examples from two different texts that illustrate your definition and make an argument for why you believe they are Romantic texts. (You may NOT use any of the text that fall under the Realism unit—check your Instructions for where Realism begins.).
2. Define Realism in your own words. Using that definition, choose two texts from the Realism unit and write an essay that supports your definition. You will need to argue why the texts you chose are “Realist” texts. This should be a well thought out answer. You should have a thesis statement/a clearly articulated definition, and examples from two different texts that illustrate your definition and make an argument for why you believe they are Realist texts. (You may NOT use any of the text that fall under the Romanticism unit—check your Instructions for where Realism begins.)

Chapter 11 Application Exercise
1. SCUBA tanks arrive at a pressure test station for testing prior to shipment. The arrival rate is eight per hour and the station test time averages five minutes. Poisson distributions are assumed. Solve the following problems, showing your work:

a. What is the utilization of the test station?
b. What is the probability that a tank will have to wait in queue prior to testing?
c. What is the mean time a tank will spend in queue?
d. What is the mean time that a tank will spend in the system?
e. What is the mean number of tanks which might be expected to be in queue at any time?
f. What is the mean number of tanks which might be expected to be in the system at any time?
g. What is the probability of finding three or more tanks in the system at any time?

2. If the tests performed on the SCUBA tanks in 1) above requires a fixed amount of time – exactly five minutes – and if arrival rate and pattern remain as described, then solve the following problems, showing your work.

a. What is the mean time a tank will spend in queue?
b. What is the mean time that a tank will spend in the system?
c. What is the mean number of tanks which might be expected to be in queue at any time?
d. What is the mean number of tanks which might be expected to be in the system at any time?
e. What effects – if any – will the constant service rates have on the overall costs of SCUBA tank production? Explain your answer.
f. What criteria, in addition to throughput time, will be relevant to any decision about changing the procedures or resources employed in the tank testing?
