Write a five page essay on the following question. Your essay should be typed (font no larger than 12 point), double-spaced, with properly formatted footnotes and bibliography. In preparing your essay, do not hesitate to consult course notes and course readings, material posted on the course website, as well as reference material held in Davidson Library (encyclopedia articles, etc.). Essays are due in Professor White’s mailbox in the Religious Studies mail room no later than 5:00 PM on Thursday February 28.

In the first half of this quarter, we have examined the ways in which various religious traditions have denied the finality of death by casting death as a transition to another sort of life. This death-as-transition perspective is reflected in religious doctrines concerning the afterlife of the dead, as well as in funerary practices and various types of rituals observed to feed, commemorate, ward off, or otherwise satisfy the dead.

Drawing on data from at least three of the following traditions, write an essay to support the argument that every world religion denies that death is final.
