Traditional media is the way most publics receive their news and form their opinions, but with the increase in technology the public has other means to form their opinions. We have seen how social media took over cases like The Casey Anthony Trial and The George Zimmerman Trial. I believe that many of theories that were presented in Chapter 13 explain the influence of media on persuading the public. I chose to focus on the specific article Florida sinkhole swallows parts of resort near Disney World, to explain aspects of the uses and gratification theory. This article presented on CNN shows how the sinkhole is affecting Florida. According to CNN, “Guests at the Summer Bay Resort in Clermont, about 10 minutes from Walt Disney World, called for help before the collapse, saying they heard loud noises and windows cracking. All guests inside the buildings — an estimated 35 people, authorities said — were evacuated before the first structure crumbled.” (Stapleton, 2013) This incident reminds the public how infamous Florida is for sinkholes. Sometimes sinkholes are life threatening, but in this particular instance there were no casualties. Following this story shows how a person gets the information they need to form their opinion. Based on the location of the sinkhole in the famous landmark, Walt Disney World, really changes how much more people outside of Florida relate to the issue.
