Statement of Research Purpose:
Empirical evidence gleaned from experience of teaching written French language skills to undergraduate students shows that there is a lack of engagement with written feedback on their written language assignments that impedes student progress in target language acquisition. This qualitative project begins from the premise that students may be unaware of the ways in which feedback can be exploited as a valuable learning tool. It then seeks to identify the ways in which students currently respond to feedback from their tutors, and then to implement new ways of delivering feedback in different formats in order to measure the effectiveness of these different ways of communicating with students about their errors as a vital means towards learning progression. Existing research in the field is minimal and so this project represents a valuable contribution to the field.
Project Aims/ Research questions:
As described above, the project aims are to improve understanding of how undergraduate French students respond to feedback on their written work, and to evaluate their engagement with different forms of responses to their errors in this area of language learning. The central research questions:
1. To what extent do students currently engage with written feedback from their tutors on their written French language work?
2. When they respond to, or make use of, feedback in a limited manner, why is this the case? What issues are they encountering with processing information in their feedback about grammar, spelling, syntax, gender, vocabulary, register, style ?
3. Can the implementation of other forms of feedback and of activities that focus on strategies for managing feedback improve students’ grasp of the value of feedback to their language acquisition?
