THE MYSTERY NOVELS
THE MYSTERY NOVELS
The mystery novels in the last logic exercises consist of a prologue and four chapters. Each of the chapters is a different puzzle for you to solve. The novels have three characteristics:
1. The information in the prologue of a novel must be used to solve each of its chapters.
2. The solution to each chapter is independent of the solutions to the other three chapters in the novel.
3. The kinds of statements made in one chapter are not the same as the kinds of statements in another chapter.
The kinds of statements for each chapter are as follows:
• Chapter 1 does not have hypothetical statements, nor are there any false statements.
• Chapter 2 does not have hypothetical statements, but it has false statements.
• Chapter 3 does not have any false statements, but it does have hypothetical statements.
• Chapter 4 contains both false statements and hypothetical statements. You will need to determine which hypothetical statements are true and which are false.
A solution scheme is provided at the end of each novel to assist you in arriving at your answers for each chapter.
