The Whole New Mind

The Whole New Mind

There are 4 parts to this essay. For the first 3 parts, which divide the text into thirds, you will choose to address only two of the five options offered within each section. For the final part of the essay, you will be working with the portfolio suggestions at the end of each chapter on the Six Senses. Your essay should be no more than 5-6 pages total.

PART I – (Chapters 1 – 3)

1. How would you characterize Pink’s description of “The Conceptual Age?” Distinguish between ‘high concept’ and ‘high touch.’ Trace how we evolved to this point historically.

2. Compare and contrast the right and left hemispheres of the brain and the functions each is responsible for. How do you observe your use of both sides of your brain in your current work/personal life? Are they well-integrated or is one side more dominant?

3. Discuss Pink’s argument related to ‘Abundance’ as justification for the shift toward more R-directed thinking. Include his take on the ‘paradox of prosperity.’ Do you agree with the point he is making? How do you think this issue has been affected by the economic downturn in recent years?

4. How are both ‘Asia’ and ‘Automation’ factors in the shift toward R-directed thinking? How are you observing the impact of either of these factors in your current work situation?

5. If you are planning to head to Graduate School, comment on Pink’s view of ‘the MFA as the new MBA.’ Do you agree? Would you ever consider enrolling in an MFA program?

PART II – (Chapters 4 – 6)

6. How has the concept of Design become ‘democratized’ in recent decades? In what ways might you be an artist or a designer? How do you marry ‘utility’ with ‘significance?’

7. Discuss how the essence of the aptitude of Storyis “content enriched by emotion.” In what ways might you be a storyteller? What is the significance of ‘organizational storytelling?’

8. Comment on Dr. Jack Coulehan’s quote “…medicine sees anecdote as the lowest form of science.” What is Pink saying here and do you agree with his perspective on medicine?

9. Discuss how Symphony is about connecting the dots, seeing the bigger picture, and understanding our relationships within a certain context. What role does ‘pattern recognition’ play here, and is this something you are good at?

10. Discuss Boundary Crossers, Inventors, and Metaphor Makers. After defining each and how they operate, which one do you relate to the most? Which do you observe the most in your work or personal environment?

PART III – (Chapters 7 – 9)

11. Comment on the difference between ‘empathy’ and ‘sympathy.’ How is this related to the work of both Daniel Goleman and Paul Ekman? How do you think our ability to empathize with each other is evolving in this country?

12. Discuss how Empathy can and does impact the quality of the healthcare we receive in this country. What is the significance of the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy (JSPE)?

13. According to the mission statement of Southwest Airlines, “People rarely succeed at anything unless they are having fun doing it.” Comment on the significance of Play in the work environment, and why games are so significant for problem-solving, self-expression, and self-exploration.

14. How do both hemispheres in the brain work towards interpreting humor? How does joyfulness differ from happiness?

15. Discuss the significance of Ronald Inglehart’s ‘World Values Survey.’ Why should we (or shouldn’t we) take spirituality seriously? Comment on Viktor Frankl’s statement: “Suffering is not a prerequisite to finding Meaning.”

PART IV –Portfolio Suggestions

At the end of each chapter on the Six Senses, you will note a Portfolio section with several suggestions for how you can express that particular sense more fully. Choose a total of three (3) ideas (not all from the same sense, spread them out among the six senses), try them out, and then write up a brief analysis of your results. How did it feel? What did you learn about yourself through each process? Were there any surprises for you in this exercise? This section should be no longer than 2-3 pages.
Note: since there are 4 parts to this essay, you may assume that each part is worth 25 points. Simply choose two out of the 5 options offered in each part that are of the most interest to you and respond to them thoroughly and completely. Cite the text wherever appropriate. I would not break your responses out into subheadings, and you don’t have to identify the number of the question you are responding to–that should be obvious. I am looking for one coherent narrative here–this is still an essay, so I am going to discourage you from writing your responses as sound bytes. However, it is perfectly acceptable to separate out the last section on the portfolio suggestions (unless you are particularly adept at integrating them within your main narrative).
