For instance, it may not be valuable to your parents to support you for another year so you can party. But if you can explain why it’ll help you get a great job after school, that could speak more directly to their self-interests.

Consider their financial situation, their desires for your success. The more insight you bring, the better. For instance, don’t just speak in terms of success, but consider what KIND of success your parents want you to have. Also, write it to your mom if she’ll make the decision. If it’s both of your parents, write it to them. You get the picture.
