Herman Wainggai, former political prisoner, a leader in West Papua’s self determination struggle and mentor of the non-violent students movement in West Papua  has been living in exile in Australia. As a leader imprisoned for subversion in the provincial capital of Jayapura, West Papua, Indonesia, having previously spent long periods in jail for his activities.In 2005 and 2006, Herman feared the safety of his life, Herman led a daring escape from West Papua when 43 West Papuans sought asylum in Australia and travelled 425 kilometres across open sea in a 25-metre traditional dugout canoe fitted with an outboard motor.  They landed in Australia at Mapoon on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. They were flying the West Papuan flag, outlawed by the Indonesian government. Their odyssey sparked media reports around the world, and when the Australian government granted them asylum Indonesia recalled its Ambassador from Canberra.

Herman has spent years working for the liberation of his homeland paradise and was twice a political prisoner of the Indonesian Republic.  Herman developed his non-violent approach to independence after questioning how the grace filled virtues of justice, peace, and love could influence his work as an activist, educator, organizer, leader and politician. He comes from a political family; his uncle Dr Thom Wainggai, killed and died in Cipinang Prison in Jakarta, Indonesia where he had been imprisoned alongside the leader of the East Timorese resistance Xanana Gusmao. He comes from a tradition of disciplined orators, craftsmen and musicians, and believes people’s dignity and their culture, as well as God’s laws and international secular laws are fundamental to the West Papuan self-determination project. He believes the independence of West Papua will be a major development in the democracy of Indonesia.
