This assessment focusses on the concept of ‘global citizenship’. In completing this task you should aim to demonstrate:

  • Your understanding of what ‘global citizenship’ means, including its relevance to law.
  • Your ability to use the concept of ‘global citizenship to reflect upon contemporary issues of global importance.
  • Your understanding of issues and materials canvassed in LCC (Weeks 7 to 12):

o   What Makes a Citizen? Citizens, Democracy and Law Making

o   Law and order in cross-cultural perspective

o   Multinational Corporations and Sovereignty

o   Across Borders: Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Migrants

o   Law and Rights in an Age of Terror

o   From September 11 to Guantanamo Bay: Security at Home or Domestic Insecurities?

 

In your essay, you are required to draw upon at least 5 of the essential and/or additional readings listed in the subject guide for weeks 7 to 12 of LCC. You may also use additional materials that you have sourced independently but be aware that these will not count towards meeting the reading requirement noted above.

 

Your essay will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • Understanding of the concepts, issues and materials canvassed in LLC.
  • Critical engagement and reflection upon these
  • Breadth of reading
  • An ability to construct an argument
  • An ability to support and illustrate points with credible evidence and examples;
  • An ability to order and communicate your thoughts in a clear (cohesive) and accessible way
  • Compliance with academic standards of presentation
  • Compliance with academic referencing practices

Presentation

Your essay should be typed on A4 paper in black 11 or 12 pt font. Double space the text and leave wide margins for marker’s comments. Your essay should be fully referenced using either Harvard or APA styles. You are required to provide a reference list at the back of your essay which includes all of the materials you have explicitly cited or referenced in the essay. Any materials that is not explicitly used in the course of the essay should not be included in the reference list.

The Legal Studies Program Rules contains information pertaining to plagiarism and how to avoid it. Prior to submitting your essay, you should ensure that it complies with basic academic standards

concerning presentation and referencing, and that in particular, it does not breach the University’s policy on plagiarism.

Submission:

Your essay must be submitted in electronic and hardcopy forms.

Essays must be submitted electronically via Turnitin. Turnitin is a web-based text-matching software system, which can be used to assist in the detection of plagiarism. Information about turnitin is also available at http://www.latrobe.edu.au/students/it/teaching/turnitin.

A link to Turnitin will be posted on the LLC LMS site to enable submission. Turnitin will be set to allow for multiple submissions prior to the due date. You do not need to submit a confirmation of submission or originality report with the hardcopy submission. Please note that your essay will not be marked until it is submitted to Turnitin

The hardcopy of your essay must be submitted via the Legal Studies Essay Box which is is situated outside the Social Sciences Office (Room 411), fourth floor, Social Sciences Building. Please attach a fully completed statement of authorship form to your essay prior to submitting it. Forms are available on the LMS site (see under the assessment block).
