Why Should Adventures of Huckleberry Finn not be banned?

Why Should Adventures of Huckleberry Finn not be banned?
The trick to the assignment, as you’ll probably guess, is to think about why we read books in school—why we have English classes, in essence—and whether on the balance Huck Finn furthers those aims or not. What is the purpose—or what should be the purpose—of taking an American Literature class during junior year (as you are all required to do and should imagine students at CA will continue to be required to do) and what is the best use of the slot in that course that Huck Finn currently fills? This issue isn’t simply whether Huck Finn is a good or bad book, but what conversations it can serve and how effectively it can be used to engage students.

Issues/questions that you might want to keep in mind as you write:

Is fiction “history”? How do we use works of literature to enhance cultural and historical understanding? What steps must be taken to use literature as “artifacts”? What aspects of literature work against this? What makes a work “important”? What is literature and why is it valuable to you? Why is it valuable to us–as a class, as a community, as a nation?

How do we account for an author’s intention (and how do we know precisely what that was) and for the way a work has functioned historically in relation to that intention? How do we balance intended versus actual effects? “N-word” vs. character development?

What’s the difference between “reading” a book and being “taught” a book? How much responsibility do teachers and the school have to mitigate the potentially negative implications of reading this book in school? Is it possible to adequately mitigate these effects? How do we deal with people’s negative responses to works that don’t affect us negatively? How can we raise the issues responsibly?

How do problematic texts offer us insights into the more complicated workings of our own responses? Can a problematic work (one that, for instance, seems to work against its own intentions at points) help to generate a better understanding than a more straightforward (and in this case perhaps more politically correct) text?

What is the status of the “race issue” in the US today? Is Huck still relevant and if so, how?
