Women in early Christianity
Answer all four questions below. Each question
Q1) “Mary Rose D’ Angelo remains skeptical of our ability to reconstruct – in any real way – the historical Mary
Magdalene because this woman’s history is now preserved only fragmentarily: ‘any version of Mary Magdalene [the
feminist historian] constructs is pieced together out of snippets of the memories and expectations embedded in the
distant conversations of long dead authors with long dispersed communities’ (1999, p. 125).” –Cobb, 382.
Q2) Your secondary authors on Women and Martyrdom have different views on the impact of gender for men and women’s
experiences of bearing witness unto death for their faith. Compare the various views of your authors, taking care to
use the in-text citation method (Tulloch, 106) for attribution.
Q3) So far in the course we have looked at a few ways the social structure of the Greco-Roman world enabled the
growth of the nascent Christian religion. Using the relevant secondary readings, discuss how a woman’s place and
status in the ancient world could enable the accommodation and expansion of earliest Christianity. You may also need
to refer to a few primary sources as proof texts (cite only; do not quote).
Q4) Some early Christian scholars such as Peter Brown, Kate Cooper and Elizabeth A. Clark maintain the stark view
that “women in early Christian texts do not, in any way, represent early Christian women” (Cobb, 388). Using your
secondary readings from the course, convey the main problems identified by scholars regarding the issue of
representation vs. historical reality of early Christian women. After conveying the viewpoints in your secondary
readings, evaluate these viewpoints keeping your discussion restricted to women mentioned in the canonical gospels
(Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).
