You will be required to use a variety of appropriate tools and frameworks to identify the issue, consider options and select an appropriate solution. You must produce a portfolio that records the ideas that your group has worked upon and the investigation and use and application of frameworks. This portfolio is not assessed but is absolutely essential to the successful completion of the assignment.

The Assignment to be handed in:

This is an in individual piece of work. You will produce a 1000-1200 word report that describes the project and it’s aims as well as the solution. This will be very brief. The main body of the report will consist of descriptions about how the group identified the specific issues facing the company, how options were generated and why the particular solution was chosen. You should also describe which tools and frameworks were used and any explanation about why they were chosen and how they helped to understand the issues and formulate the options and solutions.

Portfolio

This part is not assessed but it is essentially that you work well as a group and that you record your discussions and take notes about your research and which tools you used. Suggested content for the portfolio are:

Selection of the firm and the issue:
• Press cuttings or web articles about various business that might be likely ‘candidates’ for the investigation
• Notes on the reasons your group chose this particular company (why is the issue strategic in nature)
• Notes on the process of identifying the issue and statement of the issue with evidence (e.g. news reports etc.)

Analysis:
• Notes on which tools and frameworks should be used. You should consider the issue and identify which tools and frameworks would help you to identify the cause of the issue (remember this may include action by competitors; industry changes; poor strategy or poor strategy implementation)
• Notes on the findings of your groups analysis (based on your use of tools and frameworks)

Development of strategy alternatives:
• Notes on your groups discussions about the possible strategic solutions to the issue
• Use of tools and frameworks to generate these options
Without meaningful work in your groups you will not be able to do an effective individual submission.
Individual (Report)

The following is a suggested structure:

Introduction
• Identification of the firm and statement of the issue facing the firm
• Suggested strategic solution

Discussion of the process:
• Why you decided that the issue was worthy of investigation
• A discussion of why the solution was chosen ahead of other options. This should focus on why it provides the most suitable solution for the company (your group must discuss this in your group work)
• Discussion about the choice of tools and frameworks were used and any explanation about why they were chosen (this MUST NOT be a narrative account such as ‘we decided to use the 5 forces because it is is used to analyse industries’) but an academic justification for their choice and usefulness. This should reflect understanding of the purpose of the tools and why they are specifically useful in the particular context in which you have used it. This section must contain appropriate references from reliable sources. (Your group portfolio should reflect appropriate discussion and debate about these tools and frameworks).
• Reflection about how these tools and frameworks helped you to gain insigh and to understand the issues and formulate the options and solutions
