Thesis:

1.) To analyse if Huck and Jim created a friendship that broke the
racism that existed at the time?

2.) To Analyse how Twain tried to create empathy for particular
characters and if this was effective.

It seems like Huck forms a friendship with Jim that breaks with the social norms at the time (because slaves are not seen as people but as property), but he does it because of his capacity for empathy, for understanding Jims situation, which allows him to see Jim as a person.  Perhaps an additional layer might be to then explore what effect this has on the reader, because since the reader identifies with Huck, perhaps the reader also learns to have greater empathy, and to see Jim (and others who seem different, foreign, etc.) as people.
