Elevator Speech #1
Objective: To think about and synthesize your anthropological learning these past years, and to articulate how and why this training is significant and useful to a wider public.
Outcome: A two-minute, example or story-driven and well articulated "elevator speech" or "elevator pitch" that can be used in a variety of contexts.
An "elevator speech" is a short "pitch" that can be given immediately when a situation warrants. In this case, it is an introduction to yourself and your interests in an anthropologically relevant way. You will gear the speech to particular audiences at different times, but the bulk of it will remain the same most likely. (for example I have a different one for film festivals than I have for academics).

write a one paragraph summary on it. Your job is to determine the main points of the article, briefly paraphrase and/or summarize them (NO quotations!), and construct a well-written paragraph that includes an effective topic sentence, a body, and a concluding sentence. Although most marks will be for summarizing and paraphrasing ability, writing skills and formatting are always part of an English assignment, so edit and proofread your work!

A manufacturer delivers a new tractor to Farmer Ted on the first day of the harvest season. But the tractor will not start. It takes two weeks for the right parts to be delivered and installed. The repair bill comes to $1,000. During the two weeks, some acres of Farmer Teds crops die. He argues in court that his lost profit on those two acres is $60,000. The jury awards the full $1,000 for the tractor repairs, and $60,000 for the lost crops. Identify the two types of awards. Is it fair that Farmer Ted received 60 times the value of the repair bill for his lost crops?

Read Olaudah Equiano, pp. 524-566 in the textbook uploaded below.
Choose a quote from Equiano's narrative (it HAS to be from the selection in the textbook) and discuss how that quote contributes to the development of Equiano's character or a theme throughout the narrative. Please include the quote at the beginning of the paper.
You do not need to include in-text citations and a reference list but you should make it clear
where the information is coming from. This should be done in narrative style - for example, In
Ch.11 of the textbook, the context of X is discussed in reference to Y
Evolution, Religion, and Intelligent Design
Many people mistakenly believe that a belief in evolution precludes a belief in God or intelligent design; in other words, some people falsely think that one must be an atheist or agnostic to believe in evolution and the Big Bang. The Catholic Church is one example of a religious institution that has long held the view that evolution and the Big Bang explain how we got here. Read the below article from the Catholic Herald, and then answer the following questions: Why do you think so many people are mistaken about the ability to believe in God as well as evolution and the Big Bang? Do you find anything problematic about combining religious and scientific explanations of the universe? Explain.
NB: In this discussion, students often misuse the word theory, saying things such as the Big Bang/evolution are just theories. But to say this is a misuse of the word 'theory' as it applies to scientific theory.
